Performance Quality Yidaki from Australia

Djakapurra Munyarryun

The red dot on the Australian map at left shows the region where this didgeridoo came from. The middle of this yidaki is unpainted, showing the handsome wood grain of stringybark eucalyptus tree. The painted band designs are Wangurri and very significant to his tribe. Djakapurra, son of Wangurri clan leader Bawurr, is one of the talented and hardworking Munyarryun brothers from Dhalinybuy. Among them are Bandamul, Gurraramawuy, Buwathay, Memawuy, Malalakpuy, and Mirrwatnga. Djakapurra distinguished himself at a young age as a yidaki player, earning the right to play in ceremony and also one of his names, Ganbulapula, relating to the story of the first Yirritja moiety yidaki. He has also distinguished himself as a dancer, performing with and acting as Yolngu consultant for Bangarra Dance Theatre, Australia's premier indigenous dance company. He was the featured Aboriginal performer at the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. What a treat to own a yidaki crafted and painted by Djakapurra. This is an "old
school" instrument in excellent
condition, much more collectable
than your average didgeridoo,
and we honor that by using the
proper Yolngu word for didgeridoo,
"yidaki", here. Painted with natural ochres (earth pigments). The bell or distal end is
very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of
tone. Features a perfect natural mouthpiece that's been sanitized
with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). |
