Bandamul Munyarryun

Watch a VIDEO demo of this yidaki below!

The red dot on the Australian map at left shows the region where this didgeridoo came from. The name "Merrku Norr'yun" means singing stick. This is a ceremonial style instrument with a traditional voice. It beckons to take you on a sonic journey to Australia's far NE Arnhem Land from the comfort of your own space. Bandamul is one of the talented and hardworking Munyarryun brothers, and a son of clan leader Mathulu. Among his brothers are Gurraramawuy, Buwathay, Memawuy, Malalakpuy, Mirrwatnga and Djakapurra. They are all Wangurri clan and live at the remote outstation of Dhalunbuy. Crafted from termite hollowed eucalyptus. The interior bore is
very clear and open which increases volume, harmonics, and clarity of
tone. There is no sealer or clear finish on this instrument, preserving its true "folk art" quality standard. Natural mouthpiece sanitized with Didgeri-Clean (tea tree and lavender oil). |
Soundwise: Concert quality sound. This exceptional instrument recently arrived from Australia and has just been placed on the website. Fast and gruff with a very traditional acoustic. Built to be played in the NE Arnhem Land "hard tongue" style. The bore is completely natural. The first trumpet toot matches the drone in F# and is
very stable, making it easy to incorporate into rhythms. This yidaki
responds quickly to the slightest pressure changes and offers up tongued riddims with ease. The vocals are warm and the
balance leans toward the mid range frequencies.

This collectable yidaki will be an outstanding addition to even the most robust didgeridoo
quiver (or to get one started)!
